Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. He was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. In 1831, he took on a five-year voyage around the world on the HMS Beagle. His studies of specimens around the globe led him to formulate his theory
of evolution and his views on the process of natural selection. In 1859, he published On the Origin of Species. He died on April 19, 1882, in London.
